Abdullah Yusuf Ali (1872-1953) was an Indian-born British barrister and scholar. His translation, 'The Holy Quran: Text, Translation and Commentary,' was first published in 1934. It remains one of the most widely known and referenced English translations, with extensive footnotes and commentary providing historical and linguistic context.
Yusuf Ali aimed for a literary, poetic English style reminiscent of the King James Bible. His translation includes detailed commentary notes explaining the historical, linguistic, and theological context of each passage. He used archaic English pronouns (Thee, Thou) for addressing God.
